Primary Courses

The North Star Teaching Alliance is delighted to be working in partnership with Red Kite Teacher Training offering school direct opportunities from September 2021 in the following courses:

Primary 3-7

The Primary School Direct and Primary SCITT 3-7 courses will specialise in Early Years and Key Stage 1, teaching you how to give children the best possible start to learning in a fun and creative way, with a focus on early maths and phonics.

You’ll also develop all the skills you need to teach children in any Primary year group, which gives you the flexibility to teach older year groups once you’re qualified.

During your course, you’ll work with many inspirational teachers from across the partnership, showing you how they continuously strive to improve practice in the classroom, and enable progression across the full range of Primary year groups.

The Primary 3-7 course is available through North Star (2S6L)

Primary 5-11

The Primary School Direct and SCITT 5-11 courses provide a broad range of teaching experience across Key Stages 1 and 2. As with the 3-7 and 7-11 courses, you’ll develop the skills to teach any Primary age group once you’re qualified, but this course will give you the opportunity to experience teaching within the different Key Stages during your placements.

In the Primary year groups, creativity is at the heart of our teaching, both in the core subjects of English, Maths and Science, and across the full breadth of National Curriculum Primary subjects.

You’ll enjoy working with many inspirational teachers from across the partnership, showing you how they continuously strive to improve practice in the classroom, and enable progression across the full range of Primary year groups. You’ll also develop inspirational and innovative techniques to enthuse and engage young people.

The Primary 5-11 course is available through North Star (2PD2).

Primary 5-11 with Maths

The Primary School Direct and SCITT Primary with Mathematics courses provide a broad range of teaching experience across Key Stages 1 and 2 plus the benefit of additional leadership of Maths training, with a view to you becoming a Maths leader.

As with all Red Kite Primary courses, you’ll develop the skills to teach any Primary age group, but this course will give you the opportunity to specialise in teaching Maths during your placements.

You’ll enjoy working with many inspirational teachers from across the partnership, including exceptional Primary Maths leaders, and you’ll work with the Yorkshire Ridings Maths Hub where you will develop your maths subject knowledge, pedagogy and be prepared to lead Maths within Primary school.

You’ll see how teachers continuously strive to improve practice in the classroom and enable progression across the full range of Primary year groups. You’ll also develop inspirational and innovative techniques to enthuse and engage young people.

The Primary with Mathematics course is available through North Star (G740).

Primary 7-11

The Primary School Direct and SCITT 7-11 courses specialise in teaching Key Stage 2, developing children’s social skills and academic knowledge to a high level in Year 6. In these year groups creativity is at the heart of our teaching, both in the core subjects of English, Maths and Science, and across the full breadth of National Curriculum Primary subjects.

You’ll enjoy working with many inspirational teachers from across the partnership, showing you how they continuously strive to improve practice in the classroom, and enable progression across the full range of Primary year groups. You’ll also develop inspirational and innovative techniques to enthuse and engage young people.

Throughout the course, you’ll be developing all the skills you need to teach children in any Primary year group, giving you the flexibility to teach younger year groups once you’re qualified.

The Primary 7-11 course is available through North Star (B541).

Primary Part time 3-7 or 7-11

*Applications for the 2021/22 Part-Time Primary course will open on the 13th of October 2020*

Our new Part-Time Primary course is a flexible, two-year training programme designed especially for people who have family commitments or need to work while training.

How much time in school/training?

Altogether, over the two years, Trainees will have more than 120 days in school for each option. In addition to the days in school, Trainees will have 8 days of input over the two years with the University of Leeds (this will be completed through blended online tutorials, remote learning and face-to-face lectures). There are 4 PGCE academic modules across the 2 years and Trainees will gain 60 masters credits; 2 assignments in Year 1 (30 credits) and 2 assignments in Year 2 (30 credits).

Professional learning days are included in the training days, although there may be an occasional requirement to attend an event such as an employment conference with peers across all programmes.

There are a number of training venues across the region to make this as convenient as possible.

How do we train?

Our hybrid approach to learning combines traditional classroom experiences and digital course delivery.
