‘Support & Solutions’ – a bi-monthly breakfast club for North Star and Polaris head teachers

Support & Solutions is an informal get-together once every half term, designed to give head teachers the chance to meet other heads, create new alliances, discuss the current issues in headship and share issues with people who really understand.

The agenda:

8.00 – 8.30      Refreshments, networking, sharing of ideas and practice.

8.30 – 9.15      Focused colleague discussions and Q&A.

9.15 – 10.00       Colleague presentations on the key issues facing head teachers today.

10.15 – 11.30       North Star updates

The next breakfast club will take place on Wednesday 11th October 2017 at the Bridge Inn, Wetherby LS22 5HS. Eventbrite - Heads' Breakfast Club
Head teachers are encouraged to bring questions and solutions for focused discussion, such as approaches/objectives for Appraisal and Pay Progression, RAISE online, North Yorkshire Profile and Data tracking with/without levels.

This event was attended by 45 Head Teachers. Nigel Ashley, Head Teacher of Meadowside CP School offered updates on the final report of the commission on assessment, the report ‘KS3 The Wasted Years’, NLE and SBM accreditation and the School Improvement fund.

Morag McLoughlin (Head Teacher of Linton-on-Ouse primary school) delivered an interesting presentation on Transition in and out of school to maintain continuity in children’s education.

Ian Clennan (Head Teacher of Selby CP School) provided Ofsted updates and discussed the Challenge Review process. His material can be found here.

Support & Solutions 10 June 2015

This event was attended by 34 Head Teachers. Nigel Ashley, Head Teacher of Meadowside CP School offered updates from Ofsted and changes to the Early Years inspection handbook document, which you can view here. There is also a summary of the key changes (click here), which has been put together by the Pre-School Learning Alliance. The group also discussed changes to the inspection process for RI schools, converting RI and ‘coasting’ schools to academies, EYFS assessment and managing low recruitment rates into teaching.

Rebecca Bainbridge (Head Teacher of Sessay CE school and Husthwaite CE School) delivered a very frank and insightful presentation on shared headship. Any Head Teachers who may be in the position of leading two schools are welcomed to contact her for advice and resources.
Kerry Dalton (Head Teacher of Roecliffe CE school) presented on the Singapore maths method and tested our addition skills! Her presentation is available here.
Emma Cornhill  (Head Teacher of Fairburn CP school) delivered a presentation on innovative approaches to TA training that she has adopted and hopes to make available to North Star.
Tony Swainston, who has been working with Holy trinity Junior School on Growth Mindsets talked to the group on the subject and how it can help to improve pupil outcomes. His presentation can be viewed here.
Julie Lyon and Steve Crocker directed the Q&A session, which included questions about SIN meetings, whether there is a new category in the Ofsted framework and Virtual Learning platforms.

This event was attended by 35 Head Teachers and there was lively debate on a number of issues. Ian Clennan from Selby CP school offered Ofsted updates and Nikkie Beniams from Knayton CE school delivered a fascinating presentation on supporting adopted and looked after children. Steve Crocker from Carlton Miniott CP school and Julie Lyon from Dishforth Airfield CP school hosted a Q&A session, with discussions on mixed-age classes, working with the LA, assessment without levels and Performance Management software.
